Reflection

Globally, educational systems are adopting new technologies to integrate ICT  in the teaching and learning process, to prepare the students with the knowledge and skills they need in their subject matter. In this way, the teaching profession is evolving from teacher-centered to student-centered learning environments. “ICT integration is understood as the usage of technology seamlessly for educational processes like transacting curricular content and students working on technology to do authentic tasks” (Kainth and Kaura). ICT facilitates not only the delivery of lessons but also the learning process itself.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, 2020 has been an extraordinary year for all of us and one that will go down in history for sure. We the teachers and the students had to experience the unexpected online teaching that we had never imagined, especially with the children with pre-primary students. The students were very new to the environment and had just started with their pre-writing activities with the new academic year and to add fuel to the fire, the school got closed down. The education got interrupted this year. Although we were confronted by unforeseen challenges, we the teachers have been outstanding in performing our services to our students. At such situations we were able to use the ICT knowledge to the fullest that we have learnt during our winter program. In the process both the students and teachers got opportunities to learn and enhance our ICT knowledge. We also got opportunities to explore and learn the new teaching and learning strategies.

This time I have uploaded the videos on comparison (size, length and height). I sent the video clips for the topics given above. Then asked the students to watch the video clips and practice saying the sentences. Later I asked the students to complete the activities given in their workbook. Most of the children were able to follow the instructions correctly given in the videos and could complete the activity (workbook ‘A’ page number 29,30,31,32 and 33) correctly which made me satisfied as I was able to fulfill my set objectives. We all are aware that the children love colouring pictures. As they take lot of interest in colouring the pictures, the children were able to complete and submit their work on time. The work submitted by the students were neatly coloured and showed progress in their work.

Initially a few students were not able to participate in e-learning mainly due to their WeChat app weren’t working or due to their mobile problems. I later added them personally and did follow up one by one. Gradually, all of them co-operated and 100% participation of students was achieved. Henceforth, I will continue with the same teaching strategies. I will also continue rendering support and guidance in completing their work and to continue having 100% participation of students for e-learning.

Assessment on sounding out (s,a,t,p,i,n) - yellow card

Reflection

The topic for the lesson taught was on writing upper case (S,A,T,P,I,N) the yellow card, for class PP. Among the topics that I have covered so far, I have chosen this topic because the Education in Emergency (EIE) plan under adapted curriculum directs us to complete the phonemic awareness and the letter formation (alphabet sounds and writing of lower case and the upper case).  I also found this teaching of alphabet sounds interesting because we have to teach the students the letter sounds instead of letter names.

During the CFA workshop held this year we were familiarized how to teach the alphabet sounds to the students. The alphabets are divided into different groups (coded with different colours). First group is the yellow card (s,a,t,p,i,n) which is frequently used at this stage. Second group is the blue card (m,r,h,e,d,c). Third group is the green card (f,l,g,o,u,b) and the fourth group is the red card (w,j,v,k,z,y,q,x) which is least frequently used at this level. During the CFA workshop we were told to teach the alphabet sounds and letter formation according to the sequence that I have shown above. Which is also included in our class PP manual.

As I have completed teaching the lower case alphabets (letter sound and the letter formation), now I have started teaching how to write the upper case alphabets. In my blogger I have uploaded how I taught the students to write the upper case letters - yellow card (S,A,T,P,I,N). And I did the same while teaching the lower case alphabets. After teaching each group of sounds, I taught them to blend and segment the words. In my introduction I have revised the alphabet sounds and even showed them the lower case and the upper case letters. Then during the lesson development I used the video clip to teach them the animal names starting with those sounds. In their activity part I asked students to complete their handwriting book page number (35, 37, 42, 48, 54, and 57) by watching the video clip on letter formation. In closure I asked the students to practice reading a sentence using the sounds. Students have learnt how to blend and segment the words in their previous lesson but this is their first time experience reading a sentence using the letter sounds.  In this lesson the most of the videos are recorded from the lesson aired on BBS. Later I had to trim the video needed for my particular lesson to fulfill my objectives. Finally to assess their learning on sounds, I asked students to send a short video clip on yellow card (s,a,t,p,i,n). In this assessment about 95% of the students were able to say the sounds correctly with action. And also the work submitted by the students were well written and showed a lot of progress in their writing. The beginner learners were as well new to the wechat app. Now almost all of them under the guidance of their parents are familiar with its operation. They can now send the work assigned to them on time which eases my problem.

With all this progress in students work, the on line teaching through wechat is helping the students to learn and fulfill my lesson objectives.

Learn the " colour names"

Videos used to introduce the lesson. There are two videos for the lesson introduction. Asked students to guess the topic for the lesson after watching the video.

                                                     Video used for lesson development

Videos for their colouring activity ( Listen and colour - workbook page number 19)

Closure - asked students to practice and sing along with this video for fun and to learn the colour names.

Corrected work of the students

Reflection

On 2nd of July I had English lesson with class PP C children. The topic for the lesson taught was on colours. The teaching was done through Wechat. As discussed and decided during the meeting that classes PP to III should conduct the teaching through Wechat. There are total of twenty eight children with sixteen boys and thirteen girls.  However, teaching was not a problem for me but due to the Covid-19 pandemic all the teaching learning being on-line, all the concept had to be disseminated through video lessons. So I faced a lot of challenges especially in creating a video clip to explain the concept to the children at their level. I even had to record the songs from the YouTube using X-recorder because when I shared the link directly the children shared their concern for not being able to know how to go about and open the link shared by me so I had to record and send it. On top of that, as my school resides inside the RBP campus and majority of the student’s father being police personnel, they were send on duty due to the pandemic and majority of the mothers being illiterate it was a challenge to guide their child too.

Actually, I have chosen this topic for my blogger though it was taught in the month of July because I had to prepare my own version of explanation using a video recording and editing app in order to give the concept to the children. The lesson objective demanded only seven colours to be taught (red, blue, green, yellow, black, white and brown) whereby I had to prepare one video to teach the name of those colours. It was a difficult journey for me but I had an enriching experience. But my hard work was paid off later when majority of the children were able to complete the activity without any difficulties.

The students liked the videos sent to them and they enjoyed those videos especially the one which I have made for the lesson development.  Students shared that they were overjoyed to hear my voice in that video clip. I was happy that use of ICT made my teaching learning more effective. Most of the children were able to follow the instructions correctly given in the video and could complete the activity correctly which made me satisfied as I was able to fulfil my set objectives. Children shared that whenever they encountered problem in recognizing the colours they watched the videos time and again which helped them to complete their work smoothly. They also shared that they liked and enjoyed the colour song used during introduction and closure. On other hand a very few students were not able to complete their work correctly because of too many instructions given in their activity part. When children were asked to do the correction by following the instructions one by one given in the video, they were able to do the work correctly. Whereby the teacher need not have to repeat the instruction again.

After using ICT in my lesson I came to know that teachers have important roles to play at all stages of lesson process - before the lessons begins, during the lesson itself and after the lesson has concluded. So, till now I have been thinking that integrating ICT will lessen the role of teachers but it turns out to be just the opposite: Teachers have even greater responsibility for managing their classes and planning effective instruction.

ICT integration

ICT plays crucial role in students learning and teacher teaching. It serves the purpose as tools for the learners to enhance exploring their learning in the wider perspective. 21st century is the digital native world so it helps in enhancing their knowledge. Therefore, the teacher should allow students to get the information on given task through bloggers, Facebook, YouTube, etc. They should be allowed to use any of the resources that they wish to. Later the teacher can ask the students to explain, justify, and evaluate. Finally, they can share, collaborate, compare and publish year work.
